December Spillway Improvement Project Update

December 5, 2023

The City of Lake Quivira Spillway Improvement Project continues.  Here’s an update on developments since the last communication on November 9, 2023.

  • Schedule – Site work began on October 9th and was slowed due to numerous delays with utility relocation.  With utilities now out of the way, construction is commencing.   Weather is always a factor, but the project remains on track for substantial completion by the end of February, 2024, barring any unusual winter.  Construction of the south wall, bridge rehab work, and landscape work will occur after the spillway is complete.
  • Utility Relocation –
  • ~Kansas Gas is now working on the new service connections to Q, Inc. buildings.  This phase will be managed by Q, Inc.
  • ~Q, Inc. hopes to complete the planned mill and overlay project in the entrance area before winter once KGS is finished making the gas connections.
  • ~Water One relocated a waterline and fire hydrant in spillway area.  Repairs to the pavement in this area will be completed soon.
  • Channel Construction –
  • ~After removing the old channel floor, our general contractor, Pyramid, discovered approximately 100 feet of existing subsoil that was in poor condition.  This required additional excavation and there was ample good clay on site to stabilize the unforeseen challenge.
  • ~With the excavation complete, installation of the rough base, called a seal course, has now commenced.  Approximately 100’, or one-quarter, of the seal course was poured last week.  The next 200’is planned to be completed by mid-December.  Once the seal course is in place, construction of the channel base and walls will begin.
  • South Spillway Wall – Olsson Engineering performed additional borings last week (much deeper) to determine the stability of the area and engineering requirements for the new wall design.   Once engineering is complete and costs are known, we anticipate a change order to the existing contract to proceed with this phase of the project once the spillway is complete.
  • Lake Level – After the base of the channel is installed, which we anticipate by mid-December, the plan is to open the gate and lower the lake back to normal winter pool in order to facilitate seawall repairs.

With workers and machinery frequently in the road on Renner, please drive slowly through the construction area and exercise extreme caution.
