With the warm weather in March, the main phase of the spillway project has wrapped up. Here’s a summary of the developments since our last communication at the end of February. This will be the last update report - thanks for following along these past months.
- Schedule and Dedication
As of this writing, we are pleased to announce that the project is substantially complete. There are a few remaining open items outlined below.
We will hold a dedication ceremony at the project site on Wednesday, April 24th at 3:30 pm. Look for further communications and details for the event. - Channel Construction
Channel wall construction finished up in late February, which gave way for Pyramid to backfill the walls with gravel and finish the final grading. The “north wall” (the wall that extends north from the end of the bridge toward Renner) was formed and poured. The purpose of this wall is to stabilize the road above the channel as well as prevent vehicles from entering the channel. Additionally, Pyramid finished up with a stormwater management solution outside the gate which captures water from Terrace Trail West and routes it into the channel.
A tinted concrete cap was installed in the area between the north wall and the channel wall. This hardscaped surface is designed to prevent the growth of volunteer trees that damaged the previous structure.
Most of the fencing has been installed along both sides of the channel wall. In April, the final portions of fencing will be installed between the west gate and the channel fence to prevent pedestrians from entering into the community. - Bridge Repair
During March the deteriorated stone on both the inside and outside walls of the bridge were chiseled out and replaced and mortar joints were repaired. The final step in the stonework on the bridge is to install matching capstone which will be installed in April. Also of note, the rusted bridge girders were cleaned and repainted.
Flatwork joints in the original spillway channel were cleaned and all vegetation removed. The joints were grouted to prevent the regrowth of highly destructive vegetation. Joint cleaning and filling also occurred on the east spillway structure. - South Spillway Wall
With the decision not to replace the south wall in February, efforts have turned to how to beautify the existing structure in a more economical manner. As of this writing, a final decision has not been made but we’re exploring tuck pointing the face, repairing the damaged area and shoring up the top. - Rehab and Beautification
Seed and mat were installed to promote new grass growth and contain potential runoff. Landscaping was installed on the west side between the channel and Renner to provide a “green fence” which will grow in over the next several years. The Natural Resources Committee is exploring options to rehab the stairs leading down to the waterfall.
The Spillway Committee and the City Council are pleased with the outcome of this critical infrastructure project. We’ve had great partners with the teams from Olsson Engineering and Pyramid Contractors. We appreciate the community’s support of this project which will benefit the community for years to come.
